ORIGINS
Among the tribes of the Amazon, an ancient story is carried through generations. The most well-known telling comes from the Kaxinawá people of the Northern Amazon Basin in Brazil. Long ago, the tribe was overcome by illness. Their Pajé medicine man, tried everything he knew, but nothing brought relief. Turning to the forest in prayer and fasting, he set out on an Ayahuasca journey deep into the jungle.
There, a female spirit of the forest appeared to him. In her hands she held a frog, and from its skin she drew a white secretion. She taught the Pajé how it should be used.He carried this knowledge back to his people, and by following her guidance, he cured his brothers and sisters of their illness. From that day on, he was known as Pajé Kampu, or Kampum.
When he passed on, his spirit remained in the frog, continuing its mission to protect the health of those who defend the forest. The medicine he brought became known as Kambô, a sacred ally of cleansing, strength, and protection. In different tribes it is also called Sapo, Dow-Kiet, Kampu, or Vacina da Floresta, "vaccine of the forest."
For thousands of years, the Kaxinawá have passed this medicine down, along with many other indigenous groups of the Amazon, the Amahuaca, Katukina, Kulina, Yawanawá, Matses, Marubo, and Mayoruna among them. It remains in use among indigenous communities of the Amazon to this day.

USES AMONG TRIBES
For generations, Kambô has been used by tribes such as the Katukina, Yawanawá, Matsés, and Huni Kuin as a powerful tool for survival and vitality. Long before it became known in the West as a cleansing ritual, it served a very practical purpose: preparing the body and mind for the hunt.
